Bramshill Police College was purchased by the Home Office in 1953 and was a police training facility until 2015. Built in the 17th Century, it was partially destroyed by fire a few years later and the resultant design shows influence of the Italian Renaissance which had become popular in the late 16th Century. It was designated Grade 1 listed in 1952 and is one of the largest and most important Jacobean house mansions in England. It has 25 acres of formal gardens near the house and an 18 acre lake. Much of the grounds are laid out in the style of a medieval deer park and a herd of white deer have lived on the estate for the last 30 years. Among the 14 ghosts reputed to haunt the house is that of a bride who accidentally locked herself in a chest on her wedding night and was not found until 50 years later. Pictures in a nearby pub suggest the main drive was used for speed testing of cars in the inter war years.
